Haseeb Khawaja

Haseeb Khawaja is a Documentary Filmmaker & Journalist by profession and Human Rights Activist by nature. Basically he is a daring human rights defender with greater focus on defending rights of women & other human/ social issues, who often endangers his life in order to protect rights of susceptible communities. He is an Anchor person, and a Consultant/ Trainer as well. He uses his profession in order to amplify voices of unheard in the mainstream media and for the purpose of lobbying among the power domains.

As Journalist, he is well versed in different local, national & international Print (Newspaper and Magazine), Online & Electronic (Radio/ TV) media institutions, etc. He worked as Reporter, Anchor, Editor, Producer, Coordinator, Host and Columnist/ Blogger with Abb Takk (News & Current Affairs, National T.V. Channel), PTV News (The state of Pakistan owned News & Current Affairs National TV channel), GEO News (News & Current Affairs, National T.V. Channel), Express Tribune (Pakistani International Newspaper), Capital TV (News & Current Affairs, National T.V. Channel), Rassai TV (News & Current Affairs, National T.V.), Radio News Network (FM Radio Power 99) & Voice of America (UrduVOA), Rainbow 99 Film & Theater, etc for many years.

He is an active member of many women and children’s rights alliances such as Ending Violence Against Women and Girls (EVAWG) Alliance Pakistan, Child Rights Movement (CRM), NACG Pakistan (National Action and Coordination Group against Violence against Children) and many others human rights alliances.

Moreover he has voluntarily pioneered “Pakistani Men Against Rape” national flagship campaign with 40 chapters across Pakistan including Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), Baluchistan and Gilgit Baltistan (GB). This campaign had been designed to mark the “16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence” and in response to “#MeToo” campaign.

Furthermore he is a member (as male feminist) of Chamber of Women Social Entrepreneurs (Pakistan’s first Chamber of Women Social Entrepreneurs) and also a member of Documentary Association of Pakistan (Documentary Filmmakers based Alliance on national level), etc.

He has participated, organized, and led many rallies, public protests and facilitated many advocacy meetings among policy makers including Parliamentarians, Diplomatic Missions, Government Officers and Public Sector Autonomous Human Rights bodies; such as National Commission on the Status of Women (NCSW) and National Commission for Human Rights (NCHR), etc.

He has worked on many cases of human rights’ violations like Pakistan’s famous and mega complex honour killings’ case, Kohistan Video Case (which was about innocent girls’ slaughtering by Jirga for so-called honour) is his one of the best investigative work, which was and is highly venerated on national and international forums. While following this Kohistan Video Case as Journalist and as Activist, he was subjected to harassment and life threats, etc. Despite all these threatening situations he is still following the case since 2013. And there are different internationally recognized filmmakers/ production companies [Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy (Oscar/ Academy Award & Emmy Award-winning documentary filmmaker), Digital Warriors Productions Inc. (Canada), etc] who have produced different documentary films on Haseeb Khawaja’s investigative work and his selfless struggle for the case. These films have been/ would be going to be presented on different International Film Festivals, etc past years and in future as well. Moreover these films also have been/ would be telecasted on different international News & Current Affairs Television channels like Al Jazeera (English), VICE News (USA based media platform), etc. Lastly, their films have achieved many awards & acknowledgements from many globally renowned festivals/ platforms and personalities.

He has worked as Producer, Researcher & Coordinator (for documentaries) with different foreign media groups, e.g. ETN, PE, etc for BBC 3, Vice News, Guardian (Documentaries), Al Jazeera (Website), AJ Plus, Great Big Story (CNN), NowThis, Sky News, MSNBC, Channel 4, Buzfeed, TV 2 News (Denmark) & ARD (Germany), etc. He also has worked as News Producer for Reuters News Agency and served as Fixer for BBC.

Recently, he has produced and directed five feature documentaries on marginalised women of Pakistan, out of five, four movies are about Pakistani Christian women’s contribution in different walks of life for the progress of Pakistan in spite of facing so much religious and gender based discrimination and fifth one is about differently abled woman’s sufferings and her resilience.

He worked as Coordinator, Supervisor and Trainer, etc in many Non-Governmental national and international organizations e.g. IHS (Integrated Health Services)/ UNFPA (The United Nations Fund for Population Activities), Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP)/ National Rural Support Program (NRSP) And Plan Pakistan, etc.

He has trained the people of many Organisations/ Universities, etc on the topic of Documentary Filmmaking, Journalism & Human Rights issues, e.g. United States Educational Foundation in Pakistan (USEFP), Shirakat – Partnership for Development (NGO), Quaid e Azam University, Iqra University, etc.

Moreover, he served as Volunteer with more than 100 Governmental/ Non-Governmental local, national and international organizations/ networks for societal positive change.

He has participated in hundreds of meetings/ conferences, etc of Governmental, NGOs/ iNGOs, Alliances, etc e.g. United Nations Information Centre (UNIC)/ Australian High Commission, PODA, European Union (EU), EVAWG Alliance Pakistan, Digital Rights Foundation (DRF), Mehergarh – A Center for Learning, etc where he has delivered his talks as Panelist, Speaker, etc.

Moreover, he remained part of many campaigns, like Anti Cyber Crime Bill, Anti Honour Killings, Anti Jirga, Anti Child Sexual Abuse; legislation for Human Rights Defenders Protection, Women Empowerment, Gender Based Violence, Anti-Death Penalty, etc, He is still part of some of mentioned unfulfilled campaigns.

He has a Master’s Degree in Philosophy from Punjab University, Lahore (Punjab), Pakistan. Moreover, he is certified in over hundred courses/ training workshops related to Media, Human Rights/ Developmental Issues and some other Technical, Computer & Skill-based courses.

He has been nominated for the Switzerland based internationally recognized, 2019 Martin Ennals Award in recognition of his unique and bold services for protecting human rights and in many other Pakistani national awards as well.

Moreover, National Commission for Human Rights (NCHR) has organized a National Human Rights Conference at Islamabad (Pakistan) to celebrate International Day of Human Rights 2017; where Haseeb Khawaja has been awarded (Title: National Human Rights Activist Award 2017) by the Federal Minister for Human Rights (Government of Pakistan), Mr. Mumtaz Tarar for the recognition of his selfless social contribution to protect and promote human rights in Pakistan.

Besides that he has received many more awards/ souvenirs from many NGOs, etc and during his academic time as well from his educational institutions. Even he has won scholarships due to achieve highest-higher marks in the annual exams among all Governmental and Private schools in many times from the Government during his schooling.

He has Black Shawl (Belt) in Chinese Martial Arts {KUNG FU (Shin Ji)} and has remained Coach as well.

Currently he is running his own company [“Haseeb Khawaja Solutions (Private) Limited” {who provides consultancy services & media productions, etc}] along with his other several professional and social/ volunteer engagements.
